The Martinson Project is a collaborative effort between Swedish composer Jan Alm, American soprano Amy Elizabeth Wheeler, musicians from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Opera. In 2004, the ensemble made its debut in the Gothenburg Konserthuset's Chamber Music Series performing the premier of Jan Alm'ss Martinson Songs set to the poems of Nobel laureat Harry Martinson and scored for voice, piano, harp and string quartet. More performances of this program followed, including Martinson's 100 Year Jubileum at the Gothenburg Folkteatern and with the GSO's chamber music society, "Fika Stråket". Shortly thereafter the ensemble was invited to perform the inaugural concert for the newly renovated chamber hall at Poland's National Philharmonic in a program titled "Scandinaviana" which featured the Polish premier of Alm's Martinson Songs as well as songs and chamber music by Grieg, Nielsen, Sibelius and Stenhammar. The program was presented by Poland's National Philharmonic in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Warsaw and sponsored by Volvo, SEBanken and the Swedish Institute.
